If you learned how to ride a bike or swim when you were a kid, it comes easy to you. Same thing for water skiing. I learned in a small lake in Northern Michigan called Lake Ann when I was 5 years old. My Dad was behind the wheel that entire evening I was learning, while my Mom was in the water helping me. They were there from try 1 until I got up. My Dad is still my favorite boat driver when I'm water skiing, not because he has a lot of experience with water skiing, but because he is always trying to improve his skills as the driver and test out new things to help the person in the water get up. My Dad actually has very little experience with water skiing. He grew up on Staten Island and didn't spend much time on the water as a kid. Throughout his married life he fell in love with the lake life and wanted it to be something his kids grew up around. While I was trying to water ski for the first time, so was my Dad. I got up and eventually mastered the skill and moved to slalom, but it seemed like it was always a losing game for my Dad. He never was able to get out of the water. My Mom, who was driving, would get blamed, or the poor Bayliner, or sometimes my Dad would come to the conclusion that water skiing was just not for him. The thing we never thought to blame ended up being the problem.
As part of our Airhead Ambassadorship this summer we were able to try out the Airhead Wide Body Combo Skis. These skis are much wider at the center which makes it easier to plateau in the water. Last week we decided to test them out with the family. My Dad was convinced this was his chance to get up while the rest of us were a little more apprehensive about his abilities. After we all got up the first time and "broke some glass" (what we say when water skiing in flat conditions), it was my Dad's turn. He suited up in the Camo Cool Neolite Kwik-Dry Mens Life Vest and slid into the Wide Body Combo Skis. With skis strapped on, he plunged into the water. My Mom straightened the boat, tightened the rope and prepared to throttle the boat forward. To our surprise he got up on the first try with no struggles whatsoever! He compared this experience to, "snow skiing with powder skis or floating on water". The Airhead Wide Body Combo Skis will be our go to skis for visitors new to water skiing!
